Is your art studio or craft space out of control? Check out the art supply organizers below to make your workspace more functional so you can get back to the good stuff: making art.

I’ve done the research so you don’t have to.

There are millions of different solutions for organizing your art and craft supplies, but below are some I think are particularly top-notch.

Keep these three rules in mind as you decide:

  • Take a good look around your studio to determine how many supplies you have, and the categories they fall into. You want to store like with like, and make sure everything has a place at the end of the day.
  • Think about the storage you already have. Can you keep using those shelves if you add a few bins for paint jars? Don’t just buy stuff to buy stuff; be purposeful and deliberate in your purchases, and buy what will actually help wrangle your stash.
  • If the first and second points already seem overwhelming, then perhaps you are jumping into buying organizers before you’ve actually sorted through your supplies and gotten a handle on your stuff. Check out our How to Tame Your Art Studio series for a little help.

Cups & Holders

There’s a reason this little guy is so popular — it’s cheap enough to have multiples and practical enough to do the job with ease. If you don’t already have one, you are probably going to want one or two for your worktable. Makes finding your favorite brush a no-brainer. Get it in white or gray.

Need more than 49 brushes available at any given time? Will 96 do? This bad boy holds a scad of brushes, pencils and markers all for your reaching pleasure. Get it in sleek black.

Personally, I’ve always gone for the pretty in my studio. I have bamboo vases holding my brushes, like the one in this pretty one.

And truthfully, I kind of want to run out a buy a dozen or so brushes right now, just so I can keep them in these pretty beauties.

Bins & Baskets

Cute, modern, easy and affordable. Perfect if you are working in in multiple media simultaneously and need to see many categories of supplies at once.  A few of these and you’ll have your pens, pencils and brushes in order.

If you are on the go often, and take part of your studio with you, this handy tote can keep your essentials on your worktable until you’re ready to grab them and head out the door.

Especially great if you work with a lot of small materials (like collage and mixed-media artists), these bins are excellent for sorting and categorizing, plus they are extra-practical with handles.

Attractive, modern, these baskets are a good size for storing paint tubes, which won’t ruin them or leak through if you don’t screw the cap on tight enough!

Drawers

This drawer set is another great option for those who work with very small materials that need categorizing, like paper, beads, etc. Handy to be able to see through to access supplies quickly.

A bit bigger than the plastic drawers above, this drawer set has a little more room and height, plus it is good for those who actually don’t want to see all their odds and ends!

Carts

This rainbow cart is a favorite among artists and crafters for its gazillions of drawers in adorable, cheery colors. Categorize away with this baby! If you prefer a more minimal look, it also comes in white, black and a six-drawer steel mesh.

Love this rolling cart for its double-wide action, plus the room on top for a big cutting matt. I wish I had room in my studio for one of these!

A little smaller and a little more economical than the two options above, this cart is a great option for people whose studio is tucked into a corner of a room at home. I had one of these a while back, and it worked great for just that purpose.

Shelves

Cube shelves are a perfect solution for arts and craft storage. They can go vertical or horizontal, depending on your space, and you can throw all your supplies into bins for quick clean up. These are a particular favorite, according to reviews, and have held up well for many users.

These 6-foot-high shelves are the ones I’m using in my own studio, in white. They hold a ton and have withstood paint spills, a crazy cat that likes to climb and a whole lot of pounds of art supplies stacked onto them. Also in black.
